About Stitch & Ink

What is Stitch & Ink?

Stitch & Ink is an independent online fabric shop based in Ayrshire, Scotland, specialising in quality dressmaking fabrics, sewing supplies and creative inspiration for makers across the UK, USA, Canada & Australia. We carefully select fabrics that are beautiful to sew with, whether you're making your first garment or your fiftieth.

Where is Stitch & Ink based?

We are based in Ayrshire on the West Coast of Scotland and ship fabric orders throughout the UK, USA, Canada & Australia. We do not have a physical shop here in Ayrshire, but you can enjoy browsing our collection on our website. 

Ordering Fabric

How is fabric sold?

All our fabrics are sold by the half metre, this allows you to order just what you need for your project & reduce fabric waste. 1 = 1/2 metre. Want 1 metre? Add 2 to your basket. looking for 3 metres? its 6 you need! 

If I order multiple quantities, will my fabric be cut in one piece?

Yes, multiple quantities of the same fabric will be supplied as one continuous length. Sometimes there are breaks in the bolts of fabric, if this happens we will be in touch to discuss options. It is rare that it will affect your order, but we will also talk to you first before cutting & shipping. 

Can I order fabric samples?

No. Unfortunately due to the high turnover of our fabrics we cannot provide samples. As we grow this may change.

How do I know how much fabric I need?

The amount of fabric required depends on your sewing pattern, garment size, fabric width and design. Always check your pattern recommendations before ordering. If you're unsure, feel free to contact us for advice.

Choosing the Right Fabric

What fabric is best for dressmaking?

The best dressmaking fabric depends on your project. Cotton lawn is ideal for lightweight blouses and dresses, cotton poplin works well for structured garments, while viscose fabrics create beautiful drape for skirts and dresses. What fabric is best for beginner sewers?

Cotton fabrics are often recommended for beginners because they are stable, easy to cut and straightforward to sew. Cotton poplin and quilting cotton are particularly beginner-friendly choices. 

What is the difference between cotton poplin and cotton lawn?

Cotton poplin has a slightly firmer structure and is excellent for shirts, skirts and dresses that need shape. Cotton lawn is lighter, softer and has a more delicate drape, making it perfect for summer garments and blouses.

What is viscose fabric?

Viscose is a soft, breathable fabric known for its fluid drape. It is a popular choice for dresses, blouses, skirts and lightweight trousers.

What does fabric width mean?

Fabric width refers to the distance from one selvedge edge to the other. Wider fabrics may require less length for certain sewing projects. If you are using a pattern, it will give fabric requirements for various widths of fabric. 

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre and indicates the weight of a fabric. Lower GSM fabrics tend to be lighter and more suitable for summer garments, while higher GSM fabrics are generally heavier and more structured.

Fabric Care

Should I pre-wash fabric before sewing?

We recommend pre-washing most fabrics before cutting and sewing. This helps remove finishing treatments and allows any natural shrinkage to occur before your project is made. You don't want to spend all that time sewing a beautiful garment for it to shrink in the wash! 

Will my fabric shrink after washing?

Natural fibres such as cotton and linen can shrink slightly during their first wash. Following the care instructions provided with your fabric will help minimise shrinkage.

How should I store fabric?

Store fabric in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to help preserve colour and quality.

Do you deliver throughout the UK?

Yes, Stitch & Ink ships fabric orders across the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland)

How long does delivery take?

Delivery times vary depending on the shipping option selected and your location. Estimated delivery information is provided during checkout.

Do you ship to the Scottish Highlands and Islands?

Yes, we ship throughout Scotland, including the Highlands and Islands, although delivery times may occasionally be longer.

Do you offer international shipping?

yes we do. Please check our shipping information page for the latest details regarding international orders and available destinations. Due to constantly changing rules, the locations we can ship to will vary.

Because fabric is cut to order, returns may be subject to certain conditions. Please refer to our returns policy for full details.
